Abstract

The emergence of genetically modified (GM) animals presents both exciting possibilities and significant challenges. Ethical and religious concerns arise due to the potential impact on animal welfare and the disruption of natural order. While religious traditions often resist change, they also play a crucial role in safeguarding moral values and prompting reflection on new technologies. Despite interfaith tensions, religions often converge on core ethical principles. Given the large number of religious adherents globally, understanding their perspectives on GM animals is crucial. This paper explores the possibility of finding common ground between Islamic and Jewish law (Halal and Kosher standards) regarding the permissibility and ethical and legal considerations of GM animals. The analysis will explore how these legal systems approach issues like introducing foreign genes from non-permissible animals to permissible animals, impacting the animal’s status of Koshar or Halal, and potential implications for the food chain. The paper will conclude by highlighting areas of potential convergence and divergence between Islamic and Jewish law regarding the permissibility and ethical considerations of GM animals.
