After the Holy Quran the Hadiths are the most reliable source of the prophetic religion of Islam. In view of this importance the Companions of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.W), Tabbeen, Ulma and Mohadditheen preserved the Holy Quran in their hearts, in the same way they conserved the collection of Hadiths through memorization, inscription and teachings. They formulated such final and reliable principles of accepted hadiths because of which doubts, and innovation ended in Prophetic Hadiths. One of these methods is called narration by meaning (Riwayat bil Maana). It means the narrator expresses the Hadith in his own words instead of the original words.
Narration in the meaning (Riwayat bil Maana) is a natural and rational practice which is followed by the great Mohaditheen. The foremost foundations of the Islam are Quran and Hadith. Scholars claim that the taxt of the Quran is the same as what the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) wrote to the Companions. While the decrees of the Prophet whose term is Hadith, there are four forms of narration in the meaning (Riwayet bil Maana). Abbreviation of the text, simplification of the text, tradition of synonyms and the fourth case is that in which the narrator had an illusion of the word or was confused about the matter, so he mentioned it in the text. But Mohadditheen have allowed the above-mentioned forms of narration in the meaning (Riwayet bil Maana) with certain conditions.
This article deals with the above said conditions of Riwayet Bil Maana in detail.
