Problems of Translating Ahadith About Jihad Protecting the Homeland: (In The Light of Two Contradicting Fatwas Regarding the Indian Subcontinent as a Land of Security or a Land of War in the Nineteenth Century)

الملخص

The words such as sword, arrow create a sense of terror when these are in the hands of cruel and mafias. But when these will be in the hands of just persons these will be used for protecting the weak and oppressed from the barbarism of the merciless and evil persons. Hence, human history has witnessed in its very beginning a terrible scene on earth in which one brother kills his own brother; both are the sons of the first human and father of all prophets and messengers. The scene showed that might if not guided by the divine instructions leads humanity to destruction by misuse of the power. Therefore, to keep the human on right path, Allah sent His messengers to human guiding them to the right/straight path. The last prophet mentioned in his various teaching learning all the war techniques such as sword fighting, horse riding, archery and other tools of war known at the time of Prophet (peace be upon him). Quran clearly mentioned in chapter Al-Anfal verse No. 60:  Hence, make ready against them whatever force and war mounts you are able to muster, so that you might deter thereby the enemies of God, who are your enemies as well, and others besides them of whom you may be unaware, but of whom God is aware; and whatever you may expend in God’s cause shall be repaid to you in full, and you shall not be wronged.( Muhammad Asad) The article  deal two religious verdicts about Jihad against the British rule. One of the great scholar Shah Abdul Aziz announced Jihad against the British aggressors, whereas another scholar Molana Muhammad Hussain Batawalwi prohibited Jihad against the British rule. The researcher applied descriptive methodology with qualitative method for conducting comparison between the two contradictory verdicts based on the Quranic verses and sayings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
